IWAMIZAWA PARK

ROSEROSE

The rose garden of the north, where over 8800 roses comprised of 630 varieties bloom in season.

A myriad of roses and rugosa roses bloom on the 40 thousand hectare premises of the garden between late June and mid October. In the main spiral rose garden, large extravagant hybrid tea roses and grandiflora roses that bloom continuously are planted,
with climbing roses planted in stands and arches to create a three-dimensional effect.
On the hillside, which is otherwise known as the "Hamanasu Hill," wild rugosa roses that bloom naturally all over Hokkaido are planted.

GREENHOUSE

Enjoy a leisurely picnic on the indoor lawn.
Indoor Park "Shikisaikan"

Inside the "tropical botanical garden" you can enjoy various tropical plants all year long, and in the "large greenhouse" you can enjoy grassy lawns all year long. We took evergreens that are not common in Hokkaido, and combined them with variegated colorful plants to create a lush green environment that is full of variation.
Flowering trees bloom in season, and beautiful annuals in the flower beds give vivid color to the lawn area.

We grow over 8800 roses and rugosa roses comprised of approximately 630 varieties, the largest in Hokkaido. Ever since our renovation in 2013, we have been able to select and grow roses that are hearty, able to resist disease and withstand the harsh northern winters. We do not use any pesticides during the season, creating gardens that are gentle on the environment, our visitors, and those who work in the garden.
Though peak season for roses arrives around late June, our gorgeous climbing roses begin to bloom as early as late April inside the indoor park "Shikisaikan." We are the only gardens in which roses can be seen blooming this early in the season. The height of the roses reach as tall as 4 meters; the contrast between the early roses and the cherry blossoms in season are quite remarkable.
The rugosa roses on the "Hamanasu-no-Oka" hillside and the "Old Rose Path" begin to bloom a little earlier than those in our main tailored rose garden. Our collection of old roses is rated among the top in Hokkaido; the aroma and beauty of each delicate rose soothing to those who behold them. Inside the perennial gardens you can enjoy various types of seasonal flowers, so there is something to look forward to even when it is not rose season.
Maintaining the large premises is quite a lot of work, but with the extra help from our volunteers at Tomte, we are able to grow our roses with lots of care and love.
